We asked Mr Queen, chief instructor, some questions about his Martial Arts journey.
I would say I got into Martial Arts for all the wrong reasons. When I was 5 a boy came into school with a black eye that he said he got from Karate (I later found out it wasn’t, he didn’t do Karate but actually got it from falling over!). I thought it looked “cool” so found a karate club to join. From the second I learned the first move of my first Kata I forgot all about the black eye and knew this was something I wanted to dedicate myself to.
I don’t know where to begin! I have learnt so much from Martial Arts and it has helped shape me into the person I am today. I love the release it gives me from everyday stress when I lose all distractions when focusing on a Kata, hitting a pad, or sparring. The drive it gives me to improve not only for myself but also for the students I teach. I have learned many life lessons from my instructor Mr Ary Hauer and hope I can have the same impact on my students lives as he has had on mine
I have trained in many different Martial Arts, obtaining Dan grades or advanced Dan grades in 5 styles. Wado Ryu has always been my main passion but Mu-Chindo was a close second.
As proud as I am of the personal grades and accolades I have achieved, the things I am most proud of are things others have done. I am always so proud of my students whenever I watch them train or give their all at gradings and achieve their goals. I think the most proud I have been though was watching my son getting his 2nd Dan and my daughter getting her 1st Dan in the same grading. It was the first time they had been in a grading together and they gave it everything!
I always have goals. If I reach a goal it means it’s time to set new goals! I am currently enjoying growing Oritsu Martial Arts and hope to find a fulltime location to call home.
